Vaclav Becvar (Czechoslovakia)

September 27, 1947, Philadelphia, USA – 39-year old heavyweight Vaclav Becvar of Czechoslovakia wins a bronze medal in the 82.5kg class at the 1947 Summer Olympics in Philadelphia.

Vaclav Becvar (1908 – xxxx) was a legendary Czech weightlifter who competed for his country before WW2 and for a decade afterwards. On the national level, he won first Czech title when he was 22 and the last one when he was 45.

Becvar was a 10x champion of Czechoslovakia (1930, 1931, 1934, 1936, 1945, 1949-1953). He competed for the country at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin and took the 11th place in the 82.5+kg class.

Vaclav Becvar was a European champion (1933) and a bronze medalist of the 1947 World Championships in Philadelphia (shown on the cover photo).
