Jan Bochenek (Poland)


September 20, 2018 – Happy Birthday to Jan Bochenek (Poland, 1931-2011)! One of the best Polish weightlifters would have been 87 today…


The History in Color presents a color version of the photo of Jan Bochenek, the light heavyweight star of Team Poland in the 1950s.


Jan Bochenek (Poland, 1931-2011) was a distinguished athlete and coach of Team Poland.


As an athlete, he was a 5x champion of Poland (1954, 1956, 1957, 1960, 1961).


Bochenek was a 2x Polish Olympian. He took the 4th place in the 75kg at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne.  Bochenek won a bronze Olympic medal with  in the 82.5kg with a 420 kg (130 + 120 + 170) total in Rome in 1960.


Jan Bochenek also won 2 bronze medals at the World Championships in 1957 and 1959 and 2 bronze (1957, 1960) and 1 silver (1959) medals at the European Championships.


In the late 1970, Jan Bochenek worked as an assistant to Klemens Roguski with Team Poland and then, from 1980, coached the national weightlifting team.
