September 26, 1947, Philadelphia, PA, USA – 18-year old lightweight Peter George of Akron, OH, USA wins the World title with a 352.5kg (97.5+110+145) total in the 67.5kg class at the 1947 World Championships in Philadelphia.
This was the first gold for Peter George at the World Championships.
He went on to become one of the most distinguished athlete in the history of the U.S. and international Olympic weightlifting.
Peter George scored medals at 3 Summer Olympics – 2 silver in London (1948) and Melbourne (1956) and gold in Helsinki (1956). He won gold at 2 Pan American Games (Buenos Aires 1951, Mexico City 1955) and won 4 more World titles in addition to his first one in 1947 shown on the cover photo.
