Peter George (USA): Winning His 5th World Title in Munich in 1955

History in Color:

October 14, 1955, Munich, Germany – Olympic champion, 26-year old Peter George of Acron, Ohio, USA competes in the clean-and-jerk lifting in the 75kg weight class and wins his 5th World title at the 1955 World Championships in Munich.

Peter George was one of the most remarkable athletes that ever stepped on the competition platform in the Olympic weightlifting. He was a very fast technician and usually managed to reach the top poundage in total after the 2nd and 3rd lifts in the competition program – after the snatch and clean-and-jerk lifts.

After the press lift at the 1955 World Championships in Munich, George was behind Fedor Bogdanovsky by 7.5kg. It takes a lot of guts and mental preparedness to overcome such a difference on the elite level tournament.

In the second lift, George out snatched the Soviet middleweight by 5kg. Finally, in the clean-and-jerk part, Bogdanovsky finished with a 155kg lift and 405 kg in total. Peter George jerked 157.5kg. He also reached a 405kg total and the 1955 World title went to Peter George because of a lighter bodyweight.
