Vladimir Kaplunov (USSR, Russia): 1967 USSR Spartakiade

July 29, 1967, Moscow, Russia – 34-year old Soviet Army lightweight Vladimir Kaplunov of Khabarovsk, Russia is competing in the 67.5kg class at the 1967 USSR Spatakiade and 1967 USSR Championships in the Shakhter Weightlifting Hall in Moscow.

Vladimir Kaplunov (1933-2015) of Khabarovsk, Russia was one of the best lightweight Olympic lifters in the world in the first half of the 1960s.

Kaplunov won the World Championship in 1962, European Championship in 1964, USSR Championships in 1962, 1963, 1964 and the USSR Spartakiade in 1963. At the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, he won silver with the  432.5kg total (140+127.5+165) in the 67.5kg weight class.

He set 11 world records in his career.

Joe Puleo (USA): 1970 World Championships in Columbus, OH

September 17, 1970, Columbus, OH, USA – 28-year old light heavyweight Joe Puleo of Team USA competes in the Olympic press program in the 82.5kg class at the 1970 World Championships in Columbus.

Joe Puleo (born in 1942) of Detroit, Michigan was a 2x U.S. Olympian selected to compete for the United States in Mexico City (1968) and Moscow (1980).

He competed in the middleweight and light heavyweight classes and trained at the world famous York Barbell Club in York, PA. Joe was a 5x U.S. National Champion (1962, 1964, 1966, 1967,  1968). He won gold medals at the Pan American Games in 1963 and 1967.
