shary-press-1972

September 2, 1972, Munich, Germany – Light heavyweight Valery Shary of Minsk, Belorussia is performing one of his three official attempts to press 170kg at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.

Valery Shary competed for the Team USSR at the 1972 Olympics  in the 82.5kg weight class. All of his attempts to press 170kg failed and he was eliminated from the competition.

The Soviet team had a devastating performance in Munich in 1972.  Being a definite candidate to win most of the weight classes, Team USSR ended up with four bomb-outs and lost the national team  competition to Bulgaria.

The list of eliminated athletes included Vladimir Kanygin (75kg), Boris Pavlov, Valery Shary (82.5kg) and David Rigert (90kg).
